Why is good puppy care starting day one so important?

The foundation of your puppy's well-being is laid from the very beginning. Establishing good care habits, including proper nutrition, socialization, and early health checks, sets the stage for a lifetime of happiness and health.

When should I start training my puppy?

Misinformation tends to circulate regarding puppy training and socialization. It’s a myth that you must wait until your puppy completes all vaccinations before starting training. In fact, if you do this you miss the opportunity to train your puppy during a crucial developmental phase! Between eight and 16 weeks, puppies undergo significant experiences, and it's essential to introduce positive and safe training and socialization during this period. Puppies receive vaccinations every three weeks until they're four months old, making it entirely safe to attend classes where all dogs are vaccinated. Commencing training during this time is highly recommended, but it should be tailored to your puppy's personality. For instance, a small, shy breed may benefit more from specialized training rather than being in a class with larger, more assertive puppies like German Shepherds. When you visit us, we'll gladly discuss your puppy's breed type and recommend the best approach for their individual needs!

What are the most common health problems in puppies?

We commonly encounter various parasites in puppies, including intestinal and sometimes external parasites like fleas and ticks, depending on their origin. Ear mites, scabies (skin mites), and Demodex are additional concerns we check for during examinations. Assessing your puppy's coat and conducting a fecal sample helps identify and treat any potential intestinal parasites. Ensuring they receive the appropriate vaccines is crucial to prevent diseases like parvo, especially when some puppies may come from less reputable sources, where the risk of contagious illnesses like parvo exists. Detecting symptoms early is vital, as they may manifest within 24 to 48 hours after acquiring the puppy. Our goal is to stay vigilant and proactive in safeguarding your puppy's health.

How soon should I bring my puppy in to see a veterinarian for their first exam?

Your puppy's first veterinary visit is ideally scheduled around six to eight weeks of age. This initial exam establishes a baseline for their health and allows us to discuss vaccinations, nutrition, and preventive care.
